ADHD and learning disabilities no issue for Neurofeedback

Posted

Ilene, not her real name, a 4th grade student from Buckingham, struggled with focusing, reading, and writing skills.  She received an evaluation from school which showed a learning disability for basic reading, writing, and below grade level achievement.  Her attention was an issue as her parents reported that she struggled with on-task behaviors and task completion. She struggled with writing and on-task behaviors.  Because she was not achieving at grade level, her parents were concerned that more help was needed for Ilene to begin to make satisfactory progress.

Ilene’s parents brought her for an evaluation because of their concern for her lack of academic progress and focusing issues. As part of her intake, she was administered a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG).  A qEEG provides information on the different brain wave frequencies and the disconnects between parts of the brain that are responsible for learning difficulties.  This report identified ADHD.  Information from the qEEG also included connectivity problems between parts of her brain that interfere with learning.  The information provided by the qEEG is used to establish and track a treatment plan for remediation and normal functioning.

After areas of need are identified, neurofeedback uses a system of rewards to reinforce the brain waves that are desirable.  When that is done over time, the brain learns to produce the waves, and the new behaviors and skills emerge naturally.

ADHD and learning disabilities are the result of brain dysregulation where the dysregulated brain waves result in behavioral and skill deficits. Once the desirable brain waves are reinforced with neurofeedback, the brain is re-regulated and new behaviors and skills emerge, naturally.

As Ilene continues with her brain wave training, her behavioral and learning skills will improve and she will be able to achieve at grade level.  These changes occur naturally and without the use of any medication or drugs.  Results are considered permanent as the brain continues with the correct frequencies.
