Friends Village

Posted

On a cold Saturday afternoon, sunlight fills the sunroom at Friends Village as a circle of chairs fills with residents greeting one another with easy conversation. It’s the monthly meeting of the Gutsy Women Discussion Group, and the sense of camaraderie is immediate.

Today’s conversation, led by Lee, focuses on Julia Morgan, the pioneering American architect behind Hearst Castle. When the discussion ends, no one rushes away. Penne, one of the original members, shares how the group began after she discovered “Gutsy Women” by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton—a curiosity that grew into a shared love of uncovering stories of women whose contributions changed the world.

Moments like this capture the spirit of Friends Village: a welcoming community where curiosity, connection, and lifelong learning thrive.

A wonderful way to experience Friends Village firsthand is by joining us for one of our many programs that are open to the public. From educational talks and wellness classes to discussion groups and special events, these programs invite neighbors to learn, move, and connect alongside Friends Village residents.

February brings the return of Senior Planet from AARP, beginning February 2, with sessions held Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 am–12:15 pm. For those eager to stay active, a six-week dance class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 –3 pm, offering joyful movement and social connection.

You will also find presentations on Hannah Penn, WHYY’s program, Bridging Blocks, held on the second Thursday of each month to bring neighbors together through conversation.

Looking ahead to March, Yoga for Seniors begins again, a look at the history of crossword puzzles with Michelle Arnot, a screening of “I’ll Knock a Homer for You” about Babe Ruth, and lectures on Alice Paul and John Woolman will be available.

Together, these moments—quiet conversations, shared learning, movement, and meaningful connection—reflect what life at Friends Village is all about. It’s a place where curiosity is encouraged, friendships grow naturally, and community is truly lived every day.
