Stress response and health

Posted

According to the American Institute of Stress, 90% of all health problems are related to stress*.  Too much stress can contribute to heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and sleep disorders.  Essentially, it’s the response to situations and how one feels about them that causes stress and not the situations themselves.  So regardless of the situation, reactions physically, mentally, and emotionally contribute to feelings of stress.

Much research has been conducted on the area of stress and managing the physiological effects and responses in the body to maintain a healthier lifestyle.   One’s emotions and feelings have a direct impact on the human body. Positive emotions are good for you.  These include appreciation, care, and love.  Shifting to positive emotions is good for you as it causes a cascade of neural, biological, and hormonal events that help the whole body.  The effects are immediate and can be long-lasting.

Heart rhythm* is closely linked to the emotional balance one is experiencing. Positive emotions like joy, appreciation, compassion, and kindness have a beneficial effect on heart rhythm.  Mental clarity, creativity, and problem-solving abilities are greatly improved.  Feelings like anger, frustration, anxiety, or worry lead to increased disorder in the heart rhythm.

A heart rhythm is set up by shifting to abdominal breathing and slowly allowing the abdomen to go up by breathing in slowly to the count of 4, pausing briefly, and letting the abdomen go down as you breathe out slowly to the count of 4, and breathing a little deeper than normal. Practice this breathing technique for about five minutes when you wake up, go to sleep, and four or five times a day.  Try to shift to a positive feeling as you breathe.  Heart Rate Variability* training, available at our office, allows individuals to learn and experience the benefits of a calmer and more intuitive lifestyle. *HeartMath LLC, Boulder Creek, CA
